AI in Energy and Utilities: China's Grid Optimisation Playbook for African Executives
Grid optimisation, asset monitoring, demand forecasting and field operations — how Chinese utilities use AI at scale, and where African operators can catch up fast.

Energy and utilities is one of the most under-reported AI transformations happening in China. Grid operators, power companies, oil & gas majors and water utilities are, by 2026, among the quietest but most consequential AI adopters in the country. For African utility executives — where the problems are often similar but the starting point very different — the playbook is portable.
Where AI is actually running in Chinese energy
- Grid optimisation. Forecasting, load balancing, renewable integration, outage prediction, and phase-switching automation. China''s State Grid and Southern Grid run some of the largest production deployments globally.
- Asset monitoring and inspection. AI-enabled drones and fixed cameras across transmission lines, substations, wind farms, solar farms and pipelines.
- Demand forecasting. Short-term and long-term load forecasting, increasingly with LLM-style multimodal models that blend weather, economic and operational data.
- Predictive maintenance. Across generation fleets (thermal, hydro, wind, solar) and across transmission/distribution assets.
- Customer operations. LLM-based customer-service agents, billing, connection, and complaints handling.
- Safety and compliance. Computer vision on substation safety, helmet / PPE compliance, unauthorised-access detection.
What to pay attention to on-site
- Data architecture. Utilities run on SCADA, historian, GIS and billing systems that rarely speak to each other. Chinese utilities have invested heavily in the plumbing. Ask about it.
- Model governance. Regulated utilities have strong governance requirements. Chinese deployments have mature governance frameworks worth studying.
- Vendor ecosystem. Huawei, Alibaba Cloud, State Grid subsidiaries, specialist ISVs — the ecosystem is more vendor-neutral than it looks from outside.
- Field-ops integration. The most valuable use cases are in field operations (inspection, emergency response, restoration). That is where most African utilities have the most to gain.
Why this matters for Africa
- Grid modernisation. Most African utilities are at an inflection point — either modernising or losing ground. Chinese AI is a credible, affordable modernisation partner.
- Renewables integration. Large-scale solar and wind programs across Africa need the same forecasting and dispatch optimisation that Chinese utilities have solved.
- Loss reduction. Technical and commercial losses are massive in many African grids. AI-based non-technical-loss detection is one of the highest-ROI use cases.
How this is covered in a bespoke program
Energy is one of the core industries in our bespoke industry program. A typical energy cohort includes visits to grid-scale AI operators, utility-focused ISVs, and Chinese electric-power majors willing to share detailed briefings with African peers.
