China Procurement Agent Demos: Test a Supplier Exception

A procurement agent should be tested where a supplier fails a requirement. Separate suggested alternatives from authorized changes and binding commitments.

Direct answer. Ask the host to show a supplier that fails one mandatory requirement and trace what the agent does next. The key distinction is whether it recommends a substitute, changes an approved requirement or makes a binding commitment.

Make the exception concrete

A suitable sandbox scenario for a China procurement AI visit is an approved supplier unable to meet a delivery date. Specify that another supplier offers an earlier date but lacks a required qualification. Use fabricated commercial records supplied for the demonstration. Do not upload your confidential supplier contracts into an unfamiliar tool.

Ask the agent presenter to separate facts from inferred equivalence. A similar product description is not proof that a certification, specification or contractual requirement has been met. The agent should make unresolved conditions visible rather than silently treating them as interchangeable.

Trace three authorities

AuthorityEvidence question
RecommendationCan the agent propose an unapproved supplier for human consideration?
Requirement changeWho may waive the unmet qualification?
CommitmentWho can issue the purchase order or accept terms?

Watch the system's behavior when the required approver is unavailable. Does the request wait, escalate to another authorized role or proceed anyway? A test that shows only immediate approval does not reveal how the organization handles this operating gap.

The oversight and third-party risk rationale is grounded in NIST AI RMF Core. Its voluntary guidance does not confer procurement authority or validate a supplier. Our exception walkthrough is an original practical application for executive visits.

Preserve the decision record

Request a redacted trace showing the requirement, proposed supplier, unresolved evidence and final authorization. If the host can show only a conversational answer, record that the commitment controls were described but not observed. That limitation may justify a narrower pilot rather than a rejection of the entire product.

Connect the visit to your organization's existing approval matrix before discussing autonomous purchasing. The company-visit due-diligence guide helps organize follow-ups. Plan a procurement-focused immersion with someone who can explain the requirements that your buyers are not permitted to waive.
