The Questions Financial-Services Leaders Should Ask in China
Prepare financial-services AI questions on customer outcomes, human review, model changes, data access, complaints and the cost of exceptions.

Financial-services AI needs a clear boundary between staff assistance and decisions affecting customers. Establish the intended use before comparing systems. Ask how output is checked, who can override it and how an affected customer can raise a concern. Assess operating value together with the controls required for the particular institution and market.
What to evaluate
Use-case economics
Connect automation to cycle time, loss reduction, service quality or staff capacity.
Model controls
Inspect validation, monitoring, override and change-management procedures.
Data governance
Map consent, access, lineage, retention and cross-border constraints.
Operating model
Understand ownership between business, risk, technology, audit and vendors.
Worked evaluation exercise
The following is an illustrative assessment exercise, not a reported customer result.
For a staff knowledge assistant, use synthetic policy enquiries and check whether answers cite the current approved document. Include an obsolete policy and an ambiguous question in the test set. Measure the employee's verification time as well as response speed. Keep this evaluation separate from credit, underwriting or investment decisions, which require their own specialist review and approvals. A visit does not establish regulatory suitability for another jurisdiction.
Questions for the operating team
- What decisions can the model make, recommend or only inform?
- How are adverse outcomes investigated and remediated?
- Which control evidence is available to internal audit?
Warning signs
- Accuracy claims without segment analysis.
- Human review that exists only on paper.
- Vendor responsibility that ends before production incidents.
Planning the visit
Use these questions to scope an industry-focused China AI program. Agree which records and operating workflows can be examined before confirming meetings; host participation and access require confirmation. Our research method explains how we structure the brief and follow-up.
